Clinical and Counseling Psychology Responses

Clinical and Counseling Psychology Responses

Response 1

Sixty-five percent is a pretty good start as you begin to identify your strengths and interests. Clinical and counseling psychology often go hand in hand but with counseling, you are more likely to be doing a great deal more listening and clinical may be involved more in testing. Do you feel you have an interest in one more than the other?

  1. After completing the chapter 3 checklist I found that there were many items which related to me. The items which related to me are as follows;

Like working with people

Have an interest in helping people with problems?

Want to work with healthy people to improve their current functioning?

Have an interest in why people do the things they do?

Have an interest in identifying people’s abilities or personality functioning?

Have good listening skills and avoid tuning out when people talk about their lives?

Have an interest in mental illness?

Enjoy reading about abnormal psychology?

Enjoy reading research about mental illness?

Have an interest in applied research that can be used to better people’s lives?

Find that people consider you trustworthy?

Have compassion and feel for other people when they are suffering?

2. As you can see I relate to many of the items on this checklist as I am very interested in people’s thoughts and actions. The percentage of checked items is 70.6% which means that I am an okay match for this field. I seem to fit the area’s well and I am interested in many of the items found within clinical and counseling psychology. I am very interested in psychological principles and how people can apply them to their lives. I enjoy helping people with their problems because I want people to be successful in their lives and happy. Many people struggle with mental health problems to which I have both seen and experienced first hand. I have lots of compassion for people who are suffering and I want to help people. I really enjoy research and reading and writing about psychological research has been my favorite part of all my psychology courses. Researching mental health topics is one of my strengths and something that I really enjoy doing. Although clinical and counseling psychology matches my interests in mental illness and research it does not play much to my strengths. I am not great at listening to people and I am not great at keeping secrets. However, I can keep secrets well in a professional setting but it is still not a strength of mine. Additionally, I have worked in healthcare for the past couple of years and I don’t enjoy it. I also have a hard time listening to people’s problems for extended periods of time as I get distracted easily. Therefore, clinical and counseling psychology very much matches my interests but not so much my strengths. It is an area that I do not think I would thrive in.

  1. The checklist I chose was checklist 1.1 Is Psychology for You? I identified with 12 out of the 16 statements which gave me an overall percentage of 75%. A couple of the statements I most identified with were having an interest in how the mind works, having an interest in personality and what makes us unique, and wanting a well-rounded education.
  2. Psychology has always been pretty interesting to me so I was relieved to know that I could check most of the boxes with confidence and ease. The area does match a lot of my interests and capitalizes on some of my strengths such as being comfortable with computers and wanting to help people.
