Course Description

While there are certain characteristics of good writing that are universal, by this point in your university career you have probably noticed that different disciplines have different expectations for style, research methods, and presentation. ENGH 101 started you on the path of being a more confident academic writer; the purpose of ENGH 302 is to prepare you for more advanced writing in your particular discipline.

Specifically, ENGH 302 will help you understand how knowledge is created and transmitted in your field of study. You will explore your discipline’s methods and conventions of scholarly research. From there, you will articulate and refine your own question for scholarly inquiry and situate your investigation in an ongoing context or conversation in your field. Finally, the course will culminate in you designing and executing a final project that adds new perspectives to that conversation.

The advanced composition will help you engage in academic and non-academic inquiry as you work on narrowing a research question and as you engage with your discipline or field of study. And most exciting, it will make you a part of an ongoing scholarly conversation in your chosen field.

RESEARCH QUESTION

You will develop a research question related to an ongoing conversation in your field. This question will be the basis for all the other projects in this course.

BLOG POST (DISCIPLINE AWARENESS PROJECT)

You will choose a recently published scholarly article related to your research question and report on it for a public audience. This assignment consists of five steps:

Finding, evaluating, and summarizing a recently published scholarly article in your discipline
Analyzing your target audience and the genre expectations
Writing the blog post that reports on the scholarly findings
Analyzing the choices you made as you adapted the scholarly article for a public audience.

RESEARCH PROPOSAL & EXPLORATORY ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY-

ENGH 302 GMU

Conduct preliminary research about a current topic in your field of study in order to discover the current conversations about this issue that you can ultimately develop into a literature review (final project in the course). You will be required to summarize and evaluate four to six sources. The sources may be a mix of scholarly and other sources.

The bibliography should prepare you to compose a brief research proposal where you will establish your sufficiently narrowed topic, research question, audience, and purpose for the upcoming literature review.

Note that this is an exploratory bibliography and not the final set of sources you will need for your literature review.

PREWRITING FOR LITERATURE REVIEW

You will complete a prewriting activity of your choice that demonstrates your proposed organization for your literature review.

FINAL LITERATURE REVIEW

You will synthesize the research on your topic. The literature review will demonstrate that you have a narrow research area, that you have discovered gaps in the research, and that you are able to propose viable suggestions for future avenues of research. The literature review may also help you position yourself to write a formal proposal for OSCAR-related projects.

Minor Assignments

In addition to your major writing assignments, you will participate in a variety of class activities and homework assignments designed to prepare you for these projects. These will include regular Blackboard discussions, quizzes, and collaborative group assignments.
