FNAN 303 introduces students to the fundamental concepts, principles, and analytical tools in finance. Topics covered include the time value of money, security valuation, capital budgeting, risk and return analysis, and cost of capital. Course objectives and learning goals can be found in Appendix 1 of this syllabus.
There will be 3 quizzes, which are intended to help prepare you for exams. Each quiz will have 20 questions and be administered through Blackboard. Each will be due before the date and time listed in the table below (and in the schedule at the end of the syllabus). Lockdown Browser and Respondus Monitor will not be needed for quizzes. Quizzes are structured similarly to graded assignments, as they will be accessible for a relatively large amount of time.
|Quiz||Due day (before 8:00 pm)||Relevant topic(s)|
|03||Capital budgeting criteria
Relevant cash flows & NPV analysis
Risk & Return
Note that the 20 questions selected for each quiz is a subset of the problems that are relevant for the corresponding test. Students should make sure to study all relevant test bank problems, not just those on the quizzes.
Your score for each quiz will be based on the number of correctly answered questions. The overall score on quizzes for the semester will be the number of questions answered correctly multiplied by 2, with scores capped at a maximum of 100. Students have an unlimited number of submissions for each quiz (before it is due). Therefore, they are encouraged to record their answers and submit them repeatedly. Late submissions will not be accepted without special permission, which is relatively rare.
Many practice problems (with associated solutions) are available on Blackboard. Substantial effort has been made to construct a large set of problems that extensively covers the material relevant for this course. This set is referred to as “test bank problems” and it incorporates everything that students are expected to learn in the course.
Lecture problems are included in each set of slides. Some of these problems are reviewed in the recorded lectures, but regardless, all of them are useful in helping students learn and understand the material. Solutions to these problems are available on Blackboard.
