HUM2020 Term Project Guidelines

The Term Project for HUM2020 requires students to choose one of two options: either exploring careers in the humanities or researching how studying the humanities might help one to prepare for another career. Students should reflect on their own educational and career goals before choosing one of the options below.

Option 1: Exploring Careers in the Humanities

(Note: this option is ONLY for students going into a humanitiesrelated career.  If you aren’t sure, email me!)

Students choosing this option should begin by researching careers related to the humanities. Once you have found a career path that interests you, locate a local person in that field to visit and interview. If you aren’t sure if your profession is related to the humanities, please email me and I’ll help. Examples of humanities-related careers include writers, editors, artists, graphic designers, journalists, professors of a humanities-related field, museum staff, etc. Using the interview questions below (you may add more if you like), students will conduct an interview and record the responses by preparing an interview transcript.  Here is an example of an interview transcript:

http://www.u.arizona.edu/~kimmehea/purdue/421/exampleinterview.htm . Students will then write a 1-2 page reflection about what they’ve learned from the interview.  In total, the paper should be 3-4 pages (1-2 pages of interview transcript and 1-2 pages of reflection).

Interview Questions:

Name of person interviewed

Position Title

Location

  1. Please tell me about your work.
  2. Describe a typical work day.
  3. What skills are required in your position on a day-to-day basis?
  4. In what ways do you get to work with the arts/humanities in your position?
  5. What aspects of your work do you find most challenging? Most rewarding?
  6. Do you work more often individually or as part of a team?
  7. What is the work/life balance like in this field?
  8. What do you think is the best academic preparation for the profession? (note degrees that may be required)
  9. How did you become interested in this field?
  10. What are the qualifications you look for in a new hire?
  11. How do most people enter this profession?
  12. What would be a reasonable salary range to expect if I entered this field? What is the long-term potential?
  13. What else should I know to make an informed decision about choosing a career in this field?
  14. Is there anything you wished you knew before entering this field?
  15. Are there any professional journals or organizations I should be aware of?
  16. Where do you see this field going in the next 5-10 years?

Reflection: Following the interview transcript, prepare a 1-2 page (MLA format) reflection response as a follow-up to the interview.  In your response, reflect upon the following questions (at a minimum): How interested were you in this position/field before conducting the interview? Did your interest increase or decrease as a result of the interview and why? What did you learn that surprised you the most? Did this assignment help you to think about your own career path? Explain.

Option 2: Humanities to Prepare for Other Careers

As an introduction to this assignment, please view the following video:

Herman, Amy E. “How art can help you analyze.” TEDEd.

https://ed.ted.com/lessons/how-art-can-help-you-analyze-amy-eherman#review

The video presents an example of how studying the arts and humanities can benefit other (seemingly unrelated) fields. This option is suitable if you are majoring in something like education, social work, business, nursing, engineering, psychology, etc. For this term paper option, students will research the benefits of studying the humanities and reflect on how these benefits might help prepare them for their future career. Students are required to find at least two academically-sound, college-level sources to provide evidence of how the humanities can be beneficial. Students will report these findings in a 3-4 page paper (MLA format), complete with citations (both in-text and Works Cited page).  Note that 3-4 page is for the paper itself and does not include the Works Cited page. TCC’s librarians can help with identifying good sources, as can I. Please stick to journal articles or professional articles from highly-regarded sources. Feel free to run websites by me in advance. In your paper, be sure to identify what your career goals are before explaining how the humanities can help you achieve them!
