Case Study Lab Scenario

Wireless Networks – Case Study Lab

·       This lab has a time limit of one term

·       The lab must be completed by individual students, and thecompleted assessmentreturned to the assessor.

·       Successful completion of this lab assessment will require building the network on live equipment and completing the stated given tasks.

·       The total available marks scaled to a mark out of 100, with a pass mark of  70/100 considered to be ‘Satisfactory’

Assessment Requirements:

·       Subnet an address space with given requirements, using VLSM techniques

·       Assign appropriate addresses to interfaces and document them in the address table

·       Build the network according to the diagram

·       Erase the startup configuration and reload a router to the default state.

·       Assign the appropriate device names through the CLI

·       Configure enable passwords on all routers and switches, and set them all to “class”

·       Configre PCs with IP addresses, subnet masks, and default gateways

·       Configure static routing on all routers.

·       Verify static routing operation.

Required Resources for Live Equipment

·       2 Routers (Cisco 1941 with Cisco IOS Release 15.2(4)M3 universal image or comparable)

·       4 Switches (Cisco 2950 or 2960 with Cisco IOS Release 15.0(2) lanbasek9 image or comparable)

·       4 wireless enabled dual band laptops with dual band wireless adapters

·       Console cable to configure the Cisco IOS devices via the console ports

·       Ethernet and Serial cables as shown in the topology

·       Point to point wireless bridges

·       3 access points

ICTTEN517 Plan a wireless mesh network

Scenario:

A municipal council is looking to connect its operations administration section (“Admin”)  to its works depot (“Depot”) without having to use wired connections. The adopted solution is to use a 60GHZ wireless point to point bridge to link the two sections over a distance of 1 km. Both sections have wireless network support with the works administration officers using laptops to schedule jobs for the works depot staff. The administration section has a wireless LAN operating at 2.4GHz, and the the depot also has wireless networking support at 5GHz.

The Admin LAN is using subnet ID 134.29.1.0 /24. The Depot LAN  is using subnet ID 134.29.2.0 /24, and the wireless point to point bridge is using subnet ID 192.168.0.0 /24, where the bridge antennas have default IP addresses 192.168.0.11 and 192.168.0.12.

Because the two sections are on separate subnets, a VLSM routing protocol is required to ensure that IP traffic is routed between them. The prefeerred protocol is EIGRP with an autonomous system number 101. At present there are two wireless laptops   within each section.

The Admin WLAN uses SSID “subnet1” with an access point name of AP1. The Depot WLAN uses SSID “subnet2core” for AP2, and two SSIDs, “subnet2core” and “subnet2local” for AP3, which is going to form a wireless mesh network backbone with AP2.

The default gatway for each LAN is the highest working IP address within the respective subnet. Each of the Access Points, AP1 and AP3, has a BVI1 address of the lowest address in each subnet range. One other Access Point, AP2, will have the next available BVI1 address.

The remaining workstations cane be allocated an IP address in ascending order.

ICTTEN517 Plan a wireless mesh network

Task 1:   Research wireless mesh networks and formulate the system architecture

1.1 Confirm, with regulatory spectrum management authority,ACMA,the specific regulations regarding radio characteristics of the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and  60GHz frequencies

1.2 Determine wireless mesh network design specifications

1.3 What are the  frequency bands for operation of wireless mesh networks (WMN)

1.4 Specify the wireless technology, internet protocol (IP) version and mesh routing protocol to satisfy design criteria

1.5 Specify the hardware and software requirements for the design

Task 2: Prepare a detailed plan for the mesh network

2.1 Evaluate the maximum line of sight distances achievable between backbone nodes and between mesh nodes

2.2 Plan sites where mesh nodes will be located and plot to scale on a map

2.3  Estimate quantity and length of the links required between mesh nodes to ensure design is within specifications

2.4  Design backbone links in mesh topology for scalability of future deployments

2.5  Select a location of the internet gateway for the network

2.6 Allocate operating frequencies at mesh nodes, backbone nodes and wireless access points for optimum network performance with minimal interference from adjacent network routers

Task 3: Plan IP addresses and subnet mask

Use the 134.29.0.0 /24 network address to create an addressing scheme to accommodate all hosts on the two sub networks.

Show your VLSM calculations for each of the LAN & WAN segments. Show: (1) the range of host addresses for each subnet (2) the subnet mask for each subnet (3) the default gateway address for each subnet. Remember to allocate the highest IP address per subnet for the default gateway, and the lowest IP address for the PC.

3.1 Produce an addressing scheme and allocate IP addresses and subnet mask to mesh nodes, backbone nodes and access points                                                            (  /3 Marks)

3.2 Produce a configuration scheme to secure network

ICTTEN517 Plan a wireless mesh network

Task 4: Document the mesh network

4.1 Document plans and drawings for the mesh network                                                                                                                                    (/3 Marks)

4.2 Produce an installation plan for building the mesh network (  /3 Marks)

4.3 Install, configure and  test the mesh network, incorporating ‘as built’ amendments,                                                                                (/3 Marks)

Task 5. Evaluate the successful implementation of the design by ensuring that the workstations on all LAN segments can ping each other.

·       Produce a written report completing all the Tasks 1-4 above. The document should in printed form and a copy emailed to the assessor in the Word format :

·       The MS Word file will be emailed to the assessor
