Leah is a 6-month old infant whose newborn was 6 lbs, 8 oz with a length of 20”. At 6 months, Leah weighs 18 lbs and is 26 “in length. Her mother, Kelly, had decided to breastfeed Leah up to her 6th months as Kelly will soon return to her fulltime job. For the past month, Kelly has noticed that Leah has not taken as much breastmilk as usual, despite the fact the Kelly produces a lot of milk.
As a first-time mother, Kelly is concerned about weaning and beginning Leah on solid foods. She is not sure when to begin and what foods to initiate feeding. Kelly knows that protein is important for babies and wonders what kinds of protein foods to feed Leah. She also plans to make certain that Leah does not become an overweight child like many she has seen, so she decided to be very conscientious about fat in Leah’s diet. She would like to prepare some baby foods at home in order to save money.
 
1.       Using the CDC Height-for-Weight Growth Chart (p. 187), plot Lea’s height/weight at birth and at 6 months.
a.       Provide the percentiles for ht/wt at birth and at 6 months (to the nearest line, does not have to be exact). (3 pts)
b.      Based on the growth trend since birth, how would you evaluate Leah’s growth as compared to the average? (3 pts)
c.       Based on your evaluation, how would you evaluated Leah’s nutritional status overall? (3 pts)
 
2.       What advice/information would you provide regarding milk intake for Leah
a.       from 6 months to 1 year? (2 pts)
b.      between  1-2 years? (2 pts)
 
3.       Since Kelly will be returning to work in a few weeks, she has & questions about breastfeeding and/or formula feeding.  Answer the following as if you are consulting Kelly.
a.       Provide 5 facts about the nutritional value of breastmilk (provide more details beyond one sentence for each). (5 pts)
b.      Provide 5 facts about the nutritional value of formula (provide more details beyond one sentence for each). (5 pts)
c.       Provide 5 positive reasons other than nutrient content for breastfeeding (5 pts).
d.      For formula feeding (5 pts).
4.       How could Leah get adequate protein at 6 months? Should Kelly assume Leah is ready for solid foods at 6 months? How will Kelly know Leah is ready? (5 pts)
5.       Provide a typical one-day sample feeding schedule with specific foods for first-time feeding for Lea & indicate what food group each fulfills. Include portion sizes. (5 pts)
6.       What foods should be avoided from 6-12 months & why? (2 pts)
7.       List at 5 behaviors Kelly might find challenging when beginning to feed Leah in her first two years of life. Briefly explain each (5 pts)
